An ode to the Egunsi seed in lure of all things gourds family crazy of the Fall Season. Pumpkin, Squash, Melon and Egunsi are part of the gourd generic family, for those unfamiliar with Egunsi seed, it is said to be the miracle melon. Native to parts of Western Africa, this plant can grow under any climate conditions, from humid gullies, to dry Savannah, to tropical highlands. It looks almost identical to watermelon, but don't be fooled, they are quit different. Egunsi plant is filled with very dry, bitter flesh, the seeds are the true delicacy. I call it a multi purpose seed with many health benefits, uses and economical advantage. Shhhh, it might one day be the next SUPER FOOD! Compose of nearly 50% edible oil and another 30% pure protein, these seeds pack a lot of nutrition into a very small package. Its versatility ranges from stew thickener in making famous the Egunsi stew, fermentation of the seed is use as a flavoring agent in stews, call Ogiri in Nigeria (this is what your great grand ma would have use instead of Maggi or Knorr), snack called Robo, a meat substitute when made into a patties, supplementary baby food in making milk when mixed with water and honey, Egunsi pudding from Cameroon, etc. Not to mention its extreme resilience to pests, diseases and because it blankets the ground as it grows, can help suppress weeds, which in turn enables farmers to intercrop Egunsi with other crops.
