On this day, the 17th of June in 1885, the French Steamer Isère carried the Statue of Liberty into New York City’s harbour. The neoclassical sculpture of Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom, was designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, and was a gift to the United States from the people of France. She acts as a welcoming signal to immigrants arriving from abroad. by whiskyfrisky_part2
