AFRICAN BURIAL GROUND NYC. Before #Manhattan was a booming city, it was home to #Native Americans and eventually #Africans. In the 1990s it was discovered that African caskets had been dug up from the area right across from #CityHall, in order to construct an additional wing to a Federal Building. The caskets were found to have #Akan #Symbols, indicative of Africans from #Ghana. The Akan are #INFAMOUS for their #Revolutionary Prowess in Africa and the #Americas. From #NatTurner in #Virginia to #Nanny and #Kojo in #Jamaica, Akan influence is strong, organized and often #rebellious. The #BurialGround was a place where the Africans drew strength from their #Ancestors. When New Amsterdam was confined to the Southern Tip of the island, Africans were the buffer between the Natives and Europeans.
